Pet travel containers must comply with current IATA Live Animal Regulations and individual airline requirements.
Generally, two types of containers can be used.
Made-to-measure wooden containers
Made-to-measure wooden containers are rigid and non-collapsible. They are more robust than the plastic varieties that are available.
Rigid plastic containers
Rigid plastic containers are collapsible and suitable for most breeds of cats and dogs, but they may not be suitable for large or aggressive dogs.
Plastic containers are not made to measure and, therefore, tend to be larger than the actual size required.
Guidelines for Pet Transport Containers
All containers must be of a sufficient size to allow cats and dogs to stand, sit, and lay in a natural position and to turn about normally while standing.
It should be noted that most airlines charges are based on the volumetric weight of the container and not the combined actual weight of the pet and containers. Usually, the volumetric weight exceeds the combined weight of the pet and container.
Containers made entirely of welded wire mesh or any other type of wire mesh are not suitable for air transport and must not be used.
